Hi everyone. I just got out of a long term relationship, 3.5 years, and I'm going into the world of meeting new girls. I'm 20y/o and I would consider myself to be an average looking guy, 5'11", fairly muscular build. I've decided that I want to get braces. I just came back from the orthodontist today with an assesment and found that I need some pretty extensive work, and 2 years worth in having braces on.
In terms of attraction, how do girls find it if a guy is approaching them, and as soon as they open their mouths to say something, they see braces?
Is it a turnoff to see that a young male adult is just obtaining braces?
I would really like to know, as when I smile and generally open my mouth, it doesnt seem apparant that I need braces, but if I smile a full smile or find a way to show all of my teeth, like in heavy laughter, that's when you can see that I need braces.
So generally, is a girl less responsive if a guy were to have braces on? Or is it only a minor turnoff, or complete disinterest?
Thanks
Patrick

LOL, me too. I am getting braces too in a while and I dont know if they like it. But I think they dont because when you kiss them, well I dont know but they feel uncomfortable, but in 2 years me and you are gonna have a smile. :p

NeonKnight.
I would love to get the straight teeth, but again, I'm 20y/o. The kissing part I dont think is much of a concern. The girl that I went out with for 3.5 years had braces for 6months out of it and majority of kissing time, we didnt even notice they were there.

I asked the dentist if I could get the invisible ones, called invisalign, but he said that invisalign wouldnt be able to correct the entent of work that I need in my mouth. He said that if I wanted to cut down the amount showing, I can spend an extra $500CDN and get clear braces, but the metal band that goes around the teeth is still visible and just the little stubs that are mounted to the teeth are clear. He said it's not recommeded though because there are little plastic bands that go on the teeth, and they stain with certain foods. They get changed every week though.

Thanks alot
Patrick

I had the ceramic braces. If you've got the money, get them. From a distance, & in photos, the wire that goes across your teeth isn't even visible. A lot of people who saw me at school every day didn't even notice I had braces for months.

To be perfectly honest, I do find braces a bit of a turn off on a guy, because they make you look younger in my opinion (since it's kids who usually have braces). But getting past such a minor thing about someone's appearance wouldn't be an issue if I was interested in them.

Hi
Iplaybasketball
You have braces but how old are you? Are you 20y/o like I am? I believe that if you're going through highschool, then the pressures placed on you are different, and as it is more common to see someone in highschool with braces, it's accepted. Now I'm 20y/o, out of highschool for a # of years and the dating world is different. At least that's what I've experienced.

I see. I understand that it's less visible. But I'm still concerned about that band that goes around each brace. Does it horribly discolour with every food that you eat?

Well, thanks for your input guys

I would think taking care of your teeth would be more important than worrying about girls being turned off by the braces. If you loose your teeth, girls will be turned off even more.

Hey Patrick, I can't tell you for sure what your braces would be like, but with mine, they didn't 'horribly discolour'. If you're getting them changed every week, I'm pretty sure it would be fine. I only had mine changed every few weeks, and even then, they didn't look that bad. The elastic thing around each brace started off white, and if I had too much soft drink with artificial colours, or meals with really coloured spices, then they would go a bit off-white. It didn't look bad at all, still much less noticeable than the normal braces even when the things were discolored.

I should probably also say I'm 17, still in school so I don't really represent the age group that you're interested in.

I think you should go for it. You only have the braces for a few years, and if your teeth bother you now, it'll be so worth it.

Good luck dude

well if i were you, i'd go for it, and dont use the 500 on the clear ones, imagine what those 500 dollars could be used for. I'd say over 40% of my grade has braces and most of the people with braces look fine to me. In Fact most of the best looking girls have braces. I dont think you should worry about one part of your body, theres a lot more to a person that just teeth. Anywase, think of it this way, in 2 years, ppl will be lining up to meet you, and see a great smile :)
