The first time I laid on eyes on her
was like breaking into Tutankhamun's tomb
I think I know how Howard Carter felt
seeing all that splendour in the room

music crackled from a record
and she danced across the floor
we were transported to a beduin tent
the wind was howling at the door

her voice was soft and dulcet
poured out like wine
intoxicating and enchanting
a rhapsody so divine!

I was flicking through a book that I found in her room
it was all about redemption and how it was coming soon
she whispered "every moment is a monument to itself"
I held her then, and put that book back on the shelf.

She told me stories about people who lived in foreign lands
you could see them in her eyes and feel them in her hands
I rubbed shoulders with gypsies in the tales that she spun
danced around their campfires to every song she sung.

Her ancestors rode a caravan down from the north
they were following a river, along it's winding course
they were shunned by everyone and never found a home
the secrets of the stars, she said, to them alone were known.

all through the days that followed
salvation was assured
if love can wash away your sins
then I was surely cured
